Italian Barbaresco wines: classics with character

Barbaresco is a wine from Piedmont, more specifically from the Langhe region. It differs significantly from other wines from this Italian region. The calcareous soils and milder microclimate give it a leaner, more refined expression than its counterparts.

Winemakers are required to age Barbaresco: at least 26 months, of which at least 9 months in wood. The result? A red wine with extra barrel aging and aromas of wild roses and red fruit, possibly also with notes of chocolate, vanilla, and leather.

How to serve your Barbaresco wine

Barbaresco wines require the perfect temperature, between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius. It's best to decant young bottles beforehand. This allows the wine to breathe more and its aromas to open up better. Many Barbaresco wines truly come into their own after several years of bottle aging. Strong vintages can even be left to rest for 10 years in your cool and dark wine cellar.

The difference between Barbaresco and Barolo

Both wines are among the most famous red wines from Piedmont. They share the same grape and the same wine region, yet they differ in style, structure, and aging.

Barolo comes from an area southwest of Alba. The wine is known for its powerful tannins, deep aromas, and high concentration. Barolo must age for at least 38 months, of which at least 18 months in wood.

The climate in Barbaresco is generally milder, allowing the grapes to ripen faster. The wine shows more finesse and elegance and is more approachable. Barbaresco only needs 26 months of aging, of which at least 9 months in wood.
